Thursday Headlines from the Goat Island Signal

The GITX High School Kids lost to Kiowa Bay 34-35 on Friday night. Quarterback Josh Farmer (212 yards passing, 2 TD) gave Goat Island a 6 point lead when he scored on a 9 yard run with 3:03 remaining. The Warriors nearly turned the ball over on the very next play, but John Treat dropped what would have been a game sealing interception. Kiowa Bay then marched down the field and scored the game winning touchdown with 22 seconds remaining. The loss dropped The Kids record to 1-2 for the season, including 0-1 in Coastal Bend League play. It was also the 17th consecutive road loss for Goat Island. The Kids will return home on Friday night when they host St. Marks at Rogers Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00PM

A group of Goat Island merchants and property owners have formed an exploratory committee to explore the possibility of building a bridge/causeway between the Island and the mainland. Similar attempts have been made in the past, but have never gained much support from local citizens and business owners. Richard Worton is the owner of the Green Mermaid Inn and chairman of the exploratory committee. “This island still has plenty of potential for economic growth. But that potential can’t be tapped into if we continue to make it hard for people to get here.” The committee will hold and question and answer session on Monday night in the Green Mermaids main ballroom. All are invited to attend.

Tropical Storm Hermine graced Goat Island with her presence early Monday morning. Hermine rapidly developed in the Bay of Campeche and moved NNW before landfalling near Tampico, Mexico. The weather pattern continued to steer the remnants of Hermine ahead of a frontal boundary and into the Central US. 

Weather reports from Goat Island suggested that Hermine side swiped the island. Her bands came ashore with sustained winds of 45mph, gusting to 55mph. Officals were forced to close Ferry for nearly 9 hours as waves reached 5-8ft. Unfortunately, Hermine’s landfall occurred at high tide causing some low-lying flooding on the island, mostly in Old Town and along the West Shore hotels. The latest report from the Third Coast Weather Service stated that minor damage occurred on Goat Island. Many neighborhoods reported vegetation damage and branches lying in the streets, while Port Services reported that a shrimp boat came off its moorings and drifted out into Rogers Bay.

The Goat Island High School Kid football team opened their 2010 campaign on Friday night with a 30-14 win over visiting Riverside. Junior Quarterback Josh Farmer lead the way offensively with 134 yards passing to go along with 46 yards on the ground. Sophomore Running Back Vic Juarez added 90 yards on the ground to go along with a 6 yard scoring run, while also scoring a pair of two point conversions. 

The Kid defense also had a strong start to their season, limiting the Bobcats to 170 total yards while forcing a pair of turnovers. Senior Ty Owens recorded a sack and forced a fumble to lead the way, while cornerback JJ Hollaway intercepted a pass to setup the Kids for touchdown.

GITX will continue their season tomorrow night (Friday) when they travel to Nashville and face the defending state champion Bearcats. The game will be broadcast live on 108.1, starting at 6:30PM.

Pedro, the local bandit whose last name remains unknown is being blamed for a series of petty crimes committed last weekend. Crimes attributed to Pedro include the theft of an ice chest, beach towels and lawn chairs on the beach in front of the Boiled Crab; spoiled eggs being thrown at the front doors of the Green Mermaid Motel; and the disappearance of a stack of pallets from behind Red River groceries. Pedro has not been seen in over a month, and officials thought he may have left GITX, but now believe he’s still around. If you have information on his whereabouts please contact the GITX Sheriff’s office.

Hurricane Earl is currently threatening the East Coast, prompting local officials to remind GITX residents and visitors about the island's strict evacuation policy. Goat Island hasn’t been threatened by a Tropical Storm in nearly two years, but everyone is should remain watchful of the tropcis during Hurricane Season.

The Goat Island Summer Concert Series will draw to a close on Saturday night when Chezebergs Tast Gud perform at the Old Town Amphitheater. The free show starts at 7:30PM. Chezebergs, an island mainstay during the summer, will leave the next day to begin their annual mainland tour, starting with several casino dates in Reno, NV.

Emergency medical personel were called to Key Largo Hotel & Suites shortly after 1:00AM on Tuesday morning when a patron was found floating face down in the hotels pool. Hotel employees and guests feared the man was dead, but in fact he was passed out after a evening of drinking at the hotels swim up bar.

A unidentified man was arrested Wednesday afternoon at the Brass Parrot after punching a bartender. The perpetrator, rumored to be a local, was apparently angry about being served a “light drink.” The assault is the latest in a bizarre series of events that have occurred over the past few months as a result of the bar being accused of serving water downed or even alcohol free drinks. The Brass Parrot has been cleared by the GITX Alcohol Commission, but the controversy continues to plague the establishment.

The Goat Island High School Kids Football Team will open their season next Friday night, September 3. Rivertown will be visiting GITX and facing the Kids in a non-conference match up.  The Kids finished 5-5 last year and missed the playoffs for the 8th consecutive year. Sheriff Emmanuel Mendez reports no major chances from last years tailgating rules, but reminds fans that all glass containers are not allowed in the Rogers Field parking lot. He also asked that GITX residents treat treat the visiting Bobcats and thier fans with "Respect, dignity, and a sense of friendliness." Kickoff is at 7:30PM.

THURSDAY HEADLINES from the GOAT ISLAND SIGNAL

Ferry service between GITX and the mainland was briefly interrupted when a private yacht anchored in the ferry channel.  Traffic in both directions was stopped for a little over an hour until the Coast Guard arrived and forced the yacht to move. The boats operator was apparently napping below decks and did not know he was in the ferry channel until his vessel was boarded by the Coast Guard.

The Goat Island Alcohol Commission has concluded its investigation into complaints about bartenders at the Brass Parrot pouring light or even non-alcoholic mixed drinks. An official statement said the commission found the complaints “disturbing and worrisome” but also stated that “no evidence could be found to back up allegations.”

The GITX Sheriff’s  Department reported that 34 people have received emergency treatment for heat related illness in the past four days. The majority of the individuals were tourists but a few of them were “locals who should know better than to get themselves into that kind of situation” according to Sheriff Emmanuel Mendez. Two of the cases required the patients to be transported to the mainland for continued treatment.

According to reports obtained from the Goat Island Sheriffs Department, local troublemaker Pedro is suspected of stealing bicycles from 3 separate tourists, only to return them to their real owner, Goat Island Rentals.  A similar situation also occurred with a rented golf cart, but Pedro cannot be linked to that incident.

Commodore Richard Norton announced the dates for this years race for Lafitte's Cup. The sail boat race, which begins in Grand Isle, LA and ends at Goat Island, will start on October 19. The traditional post race party will be held at the City Pavilion on October 23. Lafitte's Cup will be held as originally scheduled despite fears that the Gulf Oil Spill would cause it to be modified or canceled completely.
